April Tasting

51 Members and guests assembled at Ca La Iaia for the April tasting given by Bodegas Enrique Mendoza, DO Alicante.  The winery was established  at the end of the 70’s, when Enrique Mendoza became extremely interested in the world of wine. Today that start has been transformed into two wineries, one for the ageing and bottling of the wine in Alfaz del Pi, from which their wines are positioned in the national and international markets and a second one in Villena( “Finca El Chaconero”), close to the “ Virgen de las Virtudes” sanctuary.   I introduced the speaker Cristian Castañeyra who is the oenologist at the bodega, and also welcomed Enrique who was attending the tasting.   A more detailed report on the tasting can be found on the web site under Tastings – Recent Tastings or by clicking on April Tasting.

Wine Trip

35 Members will be departing on 30th April for the main wine trip of the year, which this year is going to the DO of Rueda and Toro.   The group are staying in Tordesillas which is a town and municipality in the province of Valladolid, Castile and León.   They will be away for 5 days during which they will visit 7 bodegas, enjoy two group dinners and visit the Convent of Santa Clara.   A full report on the trip will be put on the web site after their return.

May Tasting

The May tasting will take place on May 17th at Punta Negra, MR Les Rotes, Denia, when the speaker will be Nani Ramon from Bodega Edetària.  You will recall we visited this bodega on last year’s May wine trip.   This rather boutique bodega claims to be the “winery of reference in Terra Alta”. Historical references to vineyards in the region date from 1185 when Count Ramón Berenguer IV ordered the area to be replanted with vines. Archaeological finds, however, suggest they existed in the Iberian Pre-Roman tribes.   It should be an interesting tasting.

If you wish to reserve accommodation at the hotel for the night please just mention that you are attending the CBWS dinner and the hotel will offer you 15% discount from the room rate.   Early booking is strongly recommended.

Please remember that the booking deadline is now the FRIDAY before the tasting.  If you have to cancel after the deadline you will still have to pay! Reservations and choice of main course please to: Penny Floodgate Tel: 965794996 or email   Reservations must be received no later than the deadline 12.00 noon on Friday 11th May. Penny will always confirm receipt of your booking.  If you have made a reservation and do not receive a confirmation from Penny you are not bookedso in that case please check with her.
