BACKGROUND INFORMATION - YEAR 2008
- The Society was founded in
1992 by Anton Massel with the support of local wine enthusiasts
- The Society has a registered
constitution and Members elect officers in January of each year
- The principal aim of the
Society is: to assist members of many nationalities to discern
good value wines, especially Spanish, among the huge range on
offer, usually by means of blind tastings
- We taste mostly Spanish
wines; sometimes we compare them with imported wines; on other occasions we
may taste wines from other countries. The wines we taste can normally be
obtained locally
- The Society is non profit
making (sin lucro) and does not trade in wine
- Meetings are normally held
in the evening of the 3rd Thursday of the month, except near
Christmas, and not at all in July and August, at venues currently within the
Calpe to Denia area
- A short talk on wine usually
precedes the tasting, which is followed by a meal, paid for on arrival
- Members complete a score
sheet for each wine tasted; the average score is then calculated. Scores of
individuals are compared with the average. The members nearest to this level
overall are awarded The Wine Taster of the Year or The Presidents Trophy in
December
- A programme outlining our
activities is published normally at the Annual General Meeting and on the
Society website:
www.costablancawinesociety.com .The website has other pertinent items
- In the interests of wine
appreciation, SMOKING is not permitted in the dining room.
- Membership is limited to
150; there is currently no limit for applicants to the waiting list
- The Annual Fees for 2008:
Membership 25/person;
- Attendance and menu
choice has to be confirmed to Sandy Fawle by noon on the Monday
preceding a tasting by mobile 646 956 986 or e-mail: sandyfawle@telefonica.net
- Cancellations after the
Monday deadline, or no-shows, are liable for payment
- Guests are welcome to
participate in most meetings on payment of a small surcharge
- A Newsletter is
circulated monthly to members and those on the waiting list. This gives, for
those not at the monthly meeting, details of future activities and any
unforeseen changes that may be required to the programme of events
- Excursions are arranged to
local and national wine producing areas
- The Society accepts no
personal liability regarding any of its planned activities, and
participants attend at their own insurance risk.
