March Tasting

The Marriott in Denia was the venue for the March tasting.   80 members and guests gathered to taste wines presented by Vinos Autóctones de España, based in Valencia.  The managing Director of the company, Guillermo Ferrer explained its philosophy as selling, distributing and exporting wine from bodegas with a small production, high quality and sensitivity to the environment.  He had brought along five wines for tasting which fitted this company philosophy.   We ran this tasting as a tutorial on wine tasting, the aim being to give our new members some tips on wine tasting and scoring and for the old hands to provide a refresher.   A full report on the tasting can be found on the Society’s web page www.costablancawinesociety.com.   The wines can be purchased direct from the company, on-line from the bodegas or by contacting me, Tim Fawle, timfawle@gmail.com and I will put in an order. Wine Trip

Participants in the wine trip should pay the balance of the cost, 290€ by no later than 6th April.   A coach will take all participants to Alicante airport, leaving Jávea (Rafalet car park) at 09.30 and Calpe (Bedding Centre – Biblos) at 10.00.   A full itinerary will be sent to all participants by the end of April.   Given that we are flying and would wish to keep baggage weight down, jackets and ties for men are not required, but dress in the evenings is smart casual.   Please remember to bring some form of identification, with photo, otherwise you may not be allowed on the aircraft.   The hotel will also require it for checking in.

Dress Code

Members are reminded that the dress code for tastings in the winter is jacket preferably with a tie and in summer, smart casual and no shorts.

Spain outstrips France and Italy in wine exports

Spain is a relative newcomer on the international circuit, compared to the French and Italians, yet it has beaten records to become the biggest wine exporter in the world. According to data published on February 23rd by Spanish wine market observatory (Observatorio Español de los Mercados del Vino – OEM) Spanish wine exports reached 22.8 million hectolitres in 2014, a 22.3 percent rise on 2013. But while the volume of sales has increased, profits have fallen 2.2 percent since 2013…But if Spain is the biggest exporter of wine in the world, why have profits fallen? The answer may lie in the fact that the majority of wine exported from Spain, 55 percent, is sold in bulk, i.e. not bottled. For full story see: The Local.es

April Tasting

Change of venue.   Due to circumstances outside our control, (a major wine fair in Madrid) we have had to change the venue for the 16th April tasting.   It will now be held at Punta Negra, MR Les Rotes, Denia, where the team from Casa del Vino, Jávea will be presenting some interesting wines.   For those wishing to stay the night at Hotel Les Rotes, they are offering special rates to members for the night of the 16th, breakfast included: a double for 90.90€, a double superior for 97.20€ and a  double special with terrace and view of the sea for 102.60€

Reservations no later than the deadline 12.00 noon on Monday 13th April, cancellations and no shows after the deadline are liable for payment. Penny will always confirm your booking. If you do not receive confirmation from Penny then you are not booked in.
