March Tasting

69 members and guests assembled at Ca La Iaia to taste five wines presented by Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro.  The presenter was Javier Navarro Belzunce, the commercial director, who proved himself a skilled presenter in several languages.

The first wine was Fan D’Oro, a 2012 100% chardonnay, a vino de mesa which had spent 12 months in French oak.   The Guía Peñin awards it 90 points and excellent value for money at 7€.   Then we tasted the Arzuaga Rosae 2013 a rosado made from Tempranillo grapes.  This wine is a new venture for the Bodega and the wine had been released only two weeks previously.   Too new to be rated by any of the wine guides, it had an ABV of 14% and costs 12.50€

This first red was La Planta 2012 Tinto a 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo).   The wine is from vines over 20 years old grown in the bodega which gives the wine its name and is at an altitude of 900 metres.  The wine received 89 points in the Guía Peñin and retails at 7.95€ which was rated as very good value for money.

The fourth wine was a Vino de Pago (see note on Vinos de Pago on web page) called Pago Florentino, a 2009 Tinto. The wine is 100% Cencibel (Tempranillo).  Costing 12.05€, the Guía Peñin classes the wine as good value for money and gives it 90 points.   The final wine was a Tinto Arzuaga Reserva de Familia 2008, 95% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.   Matured in French oak barrels for 26 months it is given 88 points by the Guía Peñin and costs 24.5€.

The evening ended with a vote of thanks for the presenter proposed by the society Vice President Tim Fawle.

In general the evening went well, although subsequently Gillian and Hugh received a complaint about the beef stroganoff which apparently nearly ran out on the last servings. This was most unfortunate for those affected and indeed uncharacteristic for a restaurant of Ca la Iaia’s standing,

May I suggest that if any incident of this nature occurs in future tastings, mention should be made immediately to me or Gillian/Hugh in order that we may take appropriate action without embarrassment to the person/persons concerned.

April Tasting – 17th April – Marriott Hotel

In this tasting we will be presenting wines from Bodegas Solar de Urbezo which is of DO Cariñena situated just to the south of Zaragoza. The wines will be presented by Sue from Casa Del Vino in Javea.  Many of you will already know her well from your wine purchases there.


 Iberian Ham with mini crackers (1 plate per table)

Shrimps Twister (1 per person)

Smoked tuna and tomato confit skewer (1 per person)

Small spoon with tomato tartar and langostines(1 per person)


Seabream with leeks and mustard cream


Rolled shoulder of lamb with vegetables

Mineral Water, Coffee and Tea.
