Ca la Iaia was the venue for 73 members and guests for a tasting presented by Bodegas Viñedos Valderiz from Ribera del Duero, located at an altitude of 825 metres. It is a familyconcern founded in 1980 and the family Esteban is one of the pioneers of organic farming in the Ribera del Duero. Four wines were tasted, all organic and all 100% Tempranillo. The tasting was presented by the managing director Juan Esteban.

The first wine was Valdehermoso Joven, 2012. Cherry in colour with violet edges, it hasan aroma of red fruits, tasty in the mouth, the absence of sulphides making the taste quite distinctive. The wine is 13.5% Alcohol by Volume (ABV) and costs 5.65 €. This wasfollowed by Valdehermoso Roble 2011 which had been aged in French oak for 10 months. It was cherry in colour with violet edge, an aroma of ripe wild fruits, an ABV of 14.5% and  costs 7.6 €.

The third wine Valdehermoso Crianza 2010 produced from vines 10 to 18 years old. Thewine was aged for 14 months in oak, 80% French and 20% American. Cherry in colour with a garnet edge, it has a balanced aroma, very smooth, an ABV of 14.5%, awarded 90 points by the Guía Peñín and very good value for money it costs 11.25 €

Finally the wine considered the Hallmark of the winery, Valderiz 2009 produced from vines older than 25 years. The wine has been aged in oak for 24 months, (80% French 20%American). Cherry in colour with a garnet edge, ripe fruit flavour, complex, tasty in the mouth with an ABV of 14.5%, the 2012 Guía Peñín awarded it 91 points. The wine costs 17.78 €

Sandra Baker proposed a vote of thanks to the bodega and the speaker and the President expressed our thanks to the restaurant.

December Christmas DinnerThursday December 12th at the Parador, Javea.  

For our celebration dinner and wine taster awards we are returning, after a lengthy absenceto the Parador in Javea, where the new chef has promised us a super occasion.

A reminder – this is our only “formal” event of the year. Traditionally gentlemen wear black tie/dinner jacket/smoking or lounge suit. It is a sign of respect for our ladies who always look so glamorous.

Along with the menu on the previous page we will be serving two of popular wines of the year so far –

White – Paco y Lola 2012, Alvarinho, from the DO, Rias Baixas. I served the 2011 production of this wine at the AGM tasting in February and this is one of the top scoring whites of the year to date. The 2012 wine has been commended by Penin and awarded 92 Peñin points. This wine is from the ROSALÍA DE CASTRO WINERY (MEAÑO, PONTEVEDRA) and is made from 100% Albariño sourced from the winery’s own vineyards.    Nose: white fruit (green apples, pear) and lemony aromas. Hints of herbs (basil).    Palate: pineapple and mango intermingled with refreshing citrus flavours.   This wine is currently available from at €10.76 per bottle.

Red – Vizcarra Senda del Oro 2012, a “Roble” from the Ribera del Duero. The 2011 was well received by the members in February, scoring 87 points. Robert Parker has awarded the 2012 92 points and Peñin 91. 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) from organic vineyards, aged 7 months in French and American oak (a minimum of 6 months). It is classified as a vino tinto joven con crianza and has an alcohol content of 14%. This wine is prepared by Juan Carlos Vizcarra Ramos, at Bodegas Vizcarra, using gravity. Parker comments of this wine ” With a superb texture and full-bodied mouthfeel, and built like a skyscraper, this multidimensional Ribera del Duero is already drinking fabulously well. It should continue to do so for up to a decade.”    Nose: Aromas of ripe red fruit and floral aromas bound together by the woody aroma. Palate: Tasty, sweet with elegant tannins, which make it a wine of great balance and length. This wines is currently available at only €8.15 a bottle From It normally retails at around €11.

Dessert – To accompany our dessert I have selected the Iberia Romate, a classic “cream” from Jerez. This is a wonderful sweet wine from the Palomino and Pedro Ximenez grapes has a dark mahogany colour – dense, bright and pleasant, a sweet and soft palate, perfect with both pasta and dessert. Aged for a minimum of 8 years. Nose: It is rounded, with oak notes, fruit fragrances and a persistent aroma. Palate: Smooth , sweet and harmonious, with velvety, deep tones that last.   This wine is available at Bodega Luis in Denia (previously in Ondarra) at €14.95 a bottle.

Excellent negotiation with the venue and our wine suppliers has allowed us to charge no more than for a normal tasting, despite the quality of the wines and the location. This promises to be a super seasonal celebration.

In September several members stayed at the Hostal Loreto in Denia, just a few hundred metres from the La Senia, where we have our January tasting (on January 16th). Matty (Horne), the owner’s wife, has agreed that she would be willing to give a 10% discount to CBWS members who wish to stay the night of the January tasting, when they book directly with the hotel and mention that they are Members.  A Normal Double becomes €44.10.
