June Tasting

Puerto Blanco is our well established venue for the June tasting and a very popular venue it always proves to be.    This year proved to be no exception as in addition to our members it attracted 19 guests.   Two of our members, Kathy and Andrew Johnson were presenting both a horizontal and a vertical tasting.   Andrew kicked off the proceedings by explaining the difference between these two forms of tasting.

A horizontal tasting compares wines from the same year but from different producers and highlights the difference between wine-making styles.   A vertical tasting involves wine from the same producer but from multiple years and illustrates the difference between vintages.   In order to provide some continuity, Kathy and Andrew chose all the wines from the same region; Somontano, which is a Denominación de Origen (DO) created in 1984, and located in the county of the same name, in the province of Huesca, in Aragon.  We tasted two whites horizontally and three reds vertically.   The full report on the tasting can be found by clicking on“June tasting” The cost of each wine and where it can be purchased (if applicable) and average score given by members is shown in the list of wines tasted in 2016, which can be found by clicking on “Wines tasted in 2016”.

Pam Cornthwaite

I am sad to have to report the death of our member Pam Cornthwaite after a short illness. I have passed on condolences to Derek on behalf of the society and very much hope we will be able to welcome him back to a tasting in the months to come.

Charity Bloodwise

I have had a note from our member Maureen Holliday regarding an event she is arranging to help raise money for UK charity Bloodwise. Maureen is a keen supporter of this charity as her Husband Morley died from Leukaemia in 2014. On Monday 25th July Andrew and Kathy are hosting a fundraising paella party at their home. Maureen would like to extend an invitation to all members and has asked that you contact her direct for further details and to let her know if you can attend so she can cater for the correct numbers. Her email is maureenaholliday@yahoo.co.uk.   Further information on the charity is available at“https://bloodwise.org.uk.   There will be ample opportunity to donate at the party but if you cannot attend and wish to make a donation please use this linkhttps://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/morleyhollidaytributefund.   Don’t forget to let Maureen know if you are able to attend.

There are no tastings in July and August, so our next tasting takes place in September.   Full details will be announced in the September Newsletter.   In the meanwhile I wish you an enjoyable and relaxing summer and look forward to seeing you again in September.

Best wishes,

John Sloggie, President
