May Tasting
61 members and their guests assembled in the Hotel MR restaurant, Punta Negra, in Denia for the May tasting.   They heard Javier Revert, the oenologist from Celler del Roure present wines from that bodega.   Celler del Roure was established in 1996 as a small family winery in the DO of Valencia producing two red wines.   It now produces five wines, some unusually aged in clay jars.   The five wines tasted were a white Cullerot, and reds: Vermell, Les Alcusses, Maduresa and Parotet.   A full report on the tasting is on this web site under Recent Tastings.
Wine Trips
45 members went on the annual wine trip to Ribera del Duero, held from the 5th to 9th May.   The group stayed in Aranda de Duero and visited five bodegas as well as the Castle at Peñafiel.   They lunched at two of the bodegas and as a group had dinner in two restaurants.   A full report of this trip is on the Society’s web site under Trips.

Next Trip.   The next trip is the autumn wine trip which will be to DO Bullas and takes place from the 21/22nd October.   Full details of the trip, including cost and booking arrangements are on this web page, under Next Trip

The June tasting will be held on the 19th June at Restaurante Puerto Blanco in Calpe.
The wines will be presented by Miguel Velasquez, Managing Director of
Bodega Casa Los Frailes, DO Valencia. The bodega has been the property of the Velasquez family since 1771 after it was confiscated from the Jesuit Friars by King Carlos 3rd of Spain in 1767.  A reorganization project took place in 1999 in which the installations were modernized and the vineyards were converted to organic farming methods. This has resulted in a range of exceptional wines with unique personalities and great quality.

This will allow the committee to arrange seating and tables.

The cost of the evening for the members will be Euros 30 and for guests it will be Euros 35.

Members should be advised that the May meeting at the RH Hotel Denia was subsidized by around 300 Euros from reserve funds, since the food element then cost 30 Euros and will cost 27 Euros at Puerto Blanco in June, leaving most of the wine costs to be paid also from reserve funds.  With rising food prices together with our stated objective of increasing wine quality, it may be necessary to increase the cost of tastings to members in the future.  This issue will be one of the items on the agenda for discussion at the forthcoming Committee Meeting.

 My best regards to all,

Gordon Sellars
