Newsletter June 2015

Dear Members,

May Tasting

65 members attended the May tasting held at one of our regular and favourite venues, Ca La Iaia.   In the absence of President Tim Fawle, Vice President John Sloggie welcomed the guests. He introduced our presenter, José Luis, the Director of Bodegas Borsao and Gordon Sellars kindly translated José Luis’s presentation.  The bodega is located in the CAMPO DE BORJA (Zaragoza, Aragón), known as “THE EMPIRE OF GARNACHA”. Set up in 1980, Campo de Borja has almost 7,500 hectares (20-25 Million kgs of Grapes). Garnacha (Grenche) represents over 60% of the D.O. vineyard plantings.  The oldest vineyards of the D.O. date back to 1145 and more than 2,000 of the 5,000 hectares of Garnacha are between 30 and 50 years old. A full report on the tasting can be found on the web site under Recent Tastings

Wine Trip

A successful annual wine trip to Ribeira- Sacra was undertaken from the 4th to 8th May. 42 members enjoyed this interesting region with its stunning scenery and good wines. That was reflected by the group buying over €6000 of Galician wine which arrived safely in Javea with no breakages!  A full report on the trip elegantly written by James Blackwell can be found on the web site by clicking Recent Trips.    Our thanks to James for writing this.

An autumn wine trip (overnight) is planned.  Details will be announced at the end of July early August.

Spanish wine: good – but sold too cheap

Spaniards make a lot of very good wine, but they sell it at the price of a bad wine. This same product is later commercialized by France and Italy at much higher prices. The explanation for Spanish wine’s inability to fetch the market prices that experts agree it deserves is many-fold: a lack of good salespeople with language skills, weak distribution networks, over-abundant harvests and low-paying customers. Another reason is the fact that Spain specializes in bulk wine. Un-bottled Spanish wine is used by bars, supermarkets and sangria makers across the globe. Last year, Spain sold 1.25 billion litres of bulk wine, a 38-percent rise from the previous year. 75% of this amount gets sent to France, Germany, Portugal and Italy…. “It is much easier to sit in your office and wait for a French agent to come to you with an order, than to go knocking on doors in Singapore,” he says. “The sales agent who goes abroad finds clients, but also finds out what people are drinking outside our borders, whether they prefer sweet wines, red or white, in a bottle or in a plastic bag, and that kind of information is essential in order to adapt our supply.” For full story see: El País in English

.June Tasting – Puerto Blanco – 18th June

A curious event took place last year in that five members shared the Society’s prize of Wine Taster of the Year all five scoring 100%.   As they are clearly wine buffs and know their wines, they are each being asked to present one of their favourite wines for the June tasting at Puerto Blanco.   The five presenters are Kathy Johnson presenting a Cava, Renate Pluis a Rosado, James Blackwell and Gaby Ferenczy a Tinto each and Andrew Johnson a dessert wine.

As we will be starting the tasting with a cava a good quality white wine will be served as the “Welcome Drink”
