The Annual General Meeting was opened by the President, Andrew Johnson at 18.30 hours at the Café del Mar in Moraira. After hearing several reports from the committee, the election of officers for 2014 took place. The new President elected was Gordon Sellars, with a new Vice President Tim Fawle. The incoming President then took over with the remainder of committee members being approved on bloc. A number of other resolutions were then dealt with and the meeting closed at 19.30 hours. Tasting – 20th February – Café del Mar – Moraira
The February tasting took place immediately after the Society’s Annual General Meeting. As is traditional, the newly elected president of the Society presented his President’s Choice. The tasting took place in the Café del Mar in Moraira and 60 members and 4 guests gathered to listen to Gordon presenting five wines (two white, three red) based on unfamiliar regions and also in some cases unfamiliar grapes. A full report on the tasting together with the average scores given by the society members to each wine are on the Society’s web site.
In respect of scoring some members have been scoring wines at the 50 level and I think it is worth pointing out that a score between 50 to 59 indicates an unacceptable wine which should not be drunk and must be reported at once to the person in charge of the tasting. As a brief guide see below the scoring system used by Peñin who are the acknowledged experts re Spanish wines.
- 95 – 100 ……….. Exceptional
- 90 – 94 …………. Excellent.
- 85 – 89 …………. Very good
- 80 – 84 …………..Good
- 70 – 79 …………..Average
- 60 – 69 …………..Not recommended
- 50 – 59 …………..Faulty.

March Tasting – 20th March – Ca La Iaia – Moraira
We look forward to re-visiting one of the society’s favourite restaurants in Teulada / Moraira, Ca La Iaia where José the proprietor will welcome us with his customary hospitality. The white wines will be from DO. Navarra, Bodegas Otazu and the reds from DO. Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Arzuaga. (Both bodegas are part of the Arzuaga Group)
