Welcome to our April Newsletter. The March tasting was hosted by Neville and Sara Richardson at Restaurante Los Amigos in Javea on Thursday March 17.  34 hardy members of CBWS braved the rain, winds and cold (well 14 degrees) to take part in the March tasting and dinner.

As members of our Tasting Team Neville and Sara organised a tasting of Wines from the Bodega Los Aljibes, near Albacete, which was visited by CBWS members several years ago and whose owner, Manuel Morante presented to us via Zoom during lockdown. Neville and Sara visited the vineyard recently to select the wines and had negotiated some very good prices.

Manuel offered us the opportunity to buy the wines tasted at ‘wholesale prices’ and agreed that if our order was over €1,500, we would receive a further 15% discount. The tasting clearly went well because between the 34 of us we placed orders on the evening of over €1,500, in fact at the time of writing Neville advised me that following the tasting which we  extended the offer to all members we are likely to exceed €3000!

In tandem with this tasting Neville and Sara had developed a very interesting wine related quiz, which coupled with these good wines and food offering from Los Amigos resulted in a very convivial evening. Many thanks to Neville and Sara for their hard work and preparation in making this tasting a great success.

I would also add that this is the second time we have used Los Amigos in Javea and the quality and standard of food and service has earned them a regular venue for us.

Next Tasting April 21, 2022  

Our next tasting will be held at Restaurante A Bordo in Club Nautico Javea.

Paul and Helen Nichols, members of our Tasting Team will be hosting this event. They are returning from visiting family in Australia and have chosen Priorat Wines for the April tasting.

The DO Priorat produces some excellent wines and it is one of only two wine regions in Spain, alongside Rioja, to qualify as a DOCa which is a higher category reserved for wines which maintain a proven consistency and quality over a long period of time.

Our Wine trip in May, to DO Montsant which borders Priorat will be interesting for those participating to compare Priorat in April with Montsant in May

The May tasting will be held at Hotel MR Les Rotes on May 19 , Denia. Several members stay at this hotel after the tasting.
We have been advised that the hotel is getting booked up and they have asked that if any members who wish to stay should make a reservation as soon as possible.

Dress code: Smart casual with jacket for men and ties optional for the men and the usual attire for the ladies.

Bookings will close as usual the Friday before the tasting which, for this month, is 12.00 noon on FRIDAY April 15. Guest’s places will be confirmed on the previous FRIDAY.  Please ensure you make your booking in good time.

 Please remember to include in the payment reference the names of the people being paid for and the event – in this case for example: “John Doe and Jane Doe April tasting”.

  • Do not make a payment until you have received confirmation from Penny.
  • As soon as Penny confirms your place you should make the payment.
  • Members should pay for their guests in this manner so that no payment is received from a non-member.
  • Please do not use a non-Spanish bank for this purpose – the charges can be horrific. If you do not have a Spanish account please get in touch with Mike Granville
  • Please make your payment as soon as possible after Penny has confirmed your place – don’t leave it until the last minute to make your transfer
