Welcome to our February Newsletter. Our first tasting of the year took place at Restaurante La Senia, Nou Roma Hotel, Denia. Prior to our tasting the AGM was held with 30 members attending and 7 members via Zoom. The minutes of the AGM will be available on the website in due course and if any member who did not attend the meeting would like a copy of the financial report please contact our Treasurer Mike Granville

We had a total of 42 members attending the tasting in the hotel’s La Senia Restaurant. As it was our first tasting of the year various Committee members selected their wine to present. The wines were well chosen, receiving favourable comments from the attendees, together with the excellent menu that was provided by the restaurant.

Next Tasting February 17, 2022  

This year our Tasting Team will be bringing new ideas to our wine  programme. The February tasting will be hosted by Caryl and Gordon Sellars and will be held at a new venue, Republic Lounge, which is below the Republic Restaurant, in Marina de Denia.

Caryl and Gordon will be presenting a selection of wines which will be paired with a great menu. The Republic Lounge is well known to some of you and their wine pairing evenings have been very successful.

For those who may wish to overnight after the proceeding, Gordon suggests the Hotel Port Denia which is 3 to 5 minutes walk from the restaurant and although not of the highest category is perfectly adequate and does have delightful sea and mountain views. Their standard charge for a double room with breakfast is around €62 but Gordon has negotiated a special rate for CBWS on the night of 17th Feb of €54,40 for a double room with breakfast for 2 persons.

This is a great new venue and we hope you will be able to attend.  Menu and booking instructions are shown below.


Lounge-style tuna tataki, sweet soy, basil, sun-dried tomato, wakame

Bisque of prawn and soft sheep’s cheese, garlic and parsley oil croutons

Crispy red mullet, tartar sauce, grapefruit wedges, sautéed potatoes with

piquillo peppers

Grilled entrecote, truffle sauce, sautéed mushrooms, spinach cake

Apple strudel, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce


This is a paired tasting menu and the above courses will be served to everyone so there is NO CHOICE REQUIRED this month.

Cost €40 per member/ €45 Guests

Bookings will close as usual the Friday before the tasting which, for this month, is 12.00 noon on FRIDAY February 11.  Guests places will be confirmed on the previous FRIDAY.  Please ensure you make your booking in good time.

 Any cancellations after the deadline will still require payment to be made for you and/or your guests.   Reservations please to: Penny Floodgate Tel: 965794996 or email:  Penny will always confirm receipt of your booking.  If you have made a reservation and do not receive a confirmation from Penny you are not booked, so in that case please check with her.

Once confirmed please pay the relevant amount into our new bank account as detailed below. Please remember to include in the payment reference the names of the people being paid for and the event – in this case for example:

“John Doe and Jane Doe February tasting”.

Dress code smart casual with optional ties and the usual attire for the ladies.


  • Do not make a payment until you have received confirmation from Penny.
  • As soon as Penny confirms your place you should make the payment to ES81 2100 9015 2102 0021 8418 being sure to include your name in the reference section.
  • Members should pay for their guests in this manner so that no payment is received from a non-member.
  • Please do not use a non-Spanish bank for this purpose – the charges can be horrific. If you do not have a Spanish account please get in touch with Mike Granville
  • Please make your payment as soon as possible after Penny has confirmed your place – don’t leave it until the last minute to make your transfer

Setting up a recipient on your Spanish bank account takes a few minutes, but once done payments to that recipient just take a few clicks.  Many members have paid their membership subscriptions by bank transfer in the past, and new members have been required to do that for some time.

Finally, please remember when attending our next tasting that it is obligatory to present your Covid vaccination passport and we also recommend that you take a lateral flow test prior to attending, just to be safe!

 Wine Trip Provisional Date May 2 – May 5 (3nights)

Next week The Wine Trip Team will be doing the recce for our wine trip in May. We hope to confirm this trip to everyone by the middle of February and you will find details here. If you are thinking of joining the Wine Trip please make a note of these dates!
