Newsletter January 2022

Las Rotas October 2019Dear Members

Welcome to our January Newsletter. We had a total of 49 members who attended the December tasting at A Bordo, Club Nautica, Javea. The December tasting is always hosted by the President who had chosen a selection of Rioja Wines.

As it was a Christmas event  there were no formalities such as wine scoring or descriptions of the wines, but was a social occasion where members could enjoy good wines together in a convivial atmosphere. In fact 35% of attendees were new members so it was an excellent opportunity to socialise and get to know fellow members.

A full report of the tasting can be accessed from the website by clicking here.

We did advise you last month that the AGM will take place on the above date followed by a wine tasting at Hotel Nou Roma, Denia in their delightful restaurant La Senia where committee members will be presenting some interesting wines.

The pressure on the Treasurer at our monthly tastings has been discussed by our Committee and it has been agreed that from the January tasting we will test a new system whereby members pay for the evening by Bank Transfer as soon as their booking is confirmed.

Please see below detailed instructions from Mike Granville:

Setting up a recipient on your Spanish bank account takes a few minutes, but once done payments to that recipient just take a few clicks.  Many members have paid their membership subscriptions by bank transfer in the past, and new members have been required to do that for some time.

During 2021 we moved from BBVA to La Caixa.  The bank account details are shown below; those who already set up payments to the society from their bank will have to change to the new La Caixa account unless they are new members who joined after 16 February 2021.

Excuse me for shouting, but this is important:

For example:   Mike & Helen Granville, January tasting

Amazingly Spanish bank statements don’t always show the name of the payer unless it is in the reference.

  • Payment will not guarantee a place, you should still book with Penny as before. As soon as Penny confirms your place you should make the payment, but do not make the payment before it is confirmed,
  • Members should pay for their guests in this manner so that no payment is received from a non-member.
  • Please do not use a non-Spanish bank for this purpose – the charges can be horrific. If you do not have a Spanish account please get in touch with me.
  • Please do not try to pay your annual subscription at this time – see below.
  • Please make your payment as soon as possible after Penny has confirmed your place – don’t leave it until the last minute to make your transfer

If you have any questions about this process please feel free to get in touch:  +44 7710 158295

We would request that all members comply with this new payment arrangement which will greatly relieve the pressure on the Treasurer during our Wine Tasting Dinners. Thank you for your collaboration.

Membership Subscription Proposal

2022 Programme

The meeting will start at 18.00h and numbers will be limited due to capacity so you are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.

The current Committee have indicated their intention to continue in their roles for 2022.  However, if there are any members who would like to join the Committee please contact the President.

The Membership Subscription Proposal, which has been agreed by the Committee will be put to the membership for their approval.  This proposal is to increase the current annual subscription from €20 to €25 per person.  As you know in 2021 the subscription charges were waived except for new members who paid €10 per person.  In view of this proposed change we will write to all Members after the AGM to clearly advise what should be paid directly to our new Bank Account.  We would ask all members to wait for this communication before paying their subscription, which should be made by Bank Transfer wherever possible.

For those members who are unable to attend the AGM you are invited to join the meeting by Zoom. If you would like to attend please email me direct –  and I will send you an invitation nearer the date and hope that the technology will work ‘on the night’.

Detailed below is the Menu. Starters are to share and I would ask you to confirm your choice of Main Course to Penny Floodgate

In our recent committee meeting it was agreed that costs for our monthly tastings will have to be increased.  As you will all know prices in restaurants have increased in recent months and in order to maintain the high quality meals that we enjoy at CBWS evenings as well as introducing members to higher priced wines that they may not normally buy for themselves, we have agreed that this increase is necessary.

Bookings will close as usual the Friday before the tasting which, for this month, is 12.00 noon on FRIDAY January 14.  Guests will be confirmed on the previous FRIDAY.  Please ensure you make your booking in good time.

Any cancellations after the deadline will still require payment to be made for you and/or your guests.   Reservations and choice of main course please to: Penny Floodgate Tel: 965794996 or email:  Penny will always confirm receipt of your booking.  If you have made a reservation and do not receive a confirmation from Penny you are not booked, so in that case please check with her.

Once confirmed please pay the relevant amount into our new bank account as detailed above. And please please remember to include in the reference all the names of the people being paid for and the event – in this case “January tasting”.

Dress code smart casual with optional ties and the usual attire for the ladies.

Finally ……..

An article which Neville has passed to me and I thought it interesting for us all to read prior to Christmas!

On behalf of the Committee we wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Healthy New Year

Best regards,
