Restaurant Abiss in Calpe was the venue for the October tasting which, on this occasion, was a Past Presidents Selection. The Abiss is becoming one of the Society’s favoured venues, despite its restriction on numbers which makes it a member’s only occasion, because of the excellent food and this time was no exception.
Previously Past Presidents have selected whatever wine they wished. This time however I set the challenge to those presenting the reds to choose a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, that year being an excellent harvest. Little did I know that as 2010 was so good it was very difficult to obtain these wines as they had quickly sold out! However our Past Presidents, through their experience and initiative, sourced their wines.
First came the whites and in the spirit of my ruling for the reds, Andrew Johnson decided to select Sauvignon Blanc, the grape of Sancerre, Bordeaux Blancs and New Zealand Marlborough’s. He presented two wines from the same age, same region and same alcohol content with the aim of drawing a comparison between them. Gordon Sellars then gave a short dissertation on Cabernet Sauvignon and the link between this grape and Sauvignon Blanc before presenting his wine. The other two reds were presented by Gaby Ferenczy and Keith Pacey.
Detailed below are the scores awarded to the wines by those members present:

Autumn Wine Trip
39 members participated in our Autumn wine trip where we visited 3 bodegas including a Vino de Pago in Requeña which is a bodega with special characteristics which causes it to “stand alone” from other wineries within a DO. There are only 17 bodegas in Spain within this category. We also visited a Cooperative in DO Manchuela who supply Marks & Spencer in the UK, and Bodegas Iniesta founded by the Barcelona footballer and captain of the Spanish National Team Andres Iniesta. Please read the full report on the website. We enjoyed some excellent wines reflected by a group spend of €4200!
For those of you who are UK based Bodegas Iniesta has contacted us to facilitate the purchase of their wine through their UK distributor TWAITES & JONES. They have offered Society members a 20% discount on their wines delivered in the UK only. This is extremely generous as they are very keen to promote Spanish wines in the UK. Those of you who did not come on the wine trip will find their wines excellent value on a price quality basis. Visit http://www.iniestawines.co.uk and if you wish to order please contact Gaby or myself for the Promotional code.
Members are rquested to pay their 2016 subscritions (20€) as soon as possible, either by cash at the November tasting, or by bank transfer see https://www.costablancawinesociety.com/CBWS/membership/ for bank details.
The November Tasting will take place at Ca La Iaia on the 19th November when wines from Bodega Viñaelena from DO Jumilla will be presented.
This bodega has been selected for it’s innovation in producing some interesting wines cultivated across the DO from a number of growers who formed this company.
As Jumilla is a red wine DO the emphasis in this tasting is focused on reds, however some members only prefer white wines so we will be offering a good white from another DO as the welcome drink and during the tasting.
The Menu is: MENÚ TÍPICO MURCIANO
Empanadilla de Patata
Zarangollo ( Revuelto de Calabazin )
Pelota de Puchero
Choto al Ajillo – Baby Kid
Bacalao Huertano – Cod.
Pan de Calatrava
