74 members and guests attended the September tasting at Restaurante La Senia in Denia. I introduced John Davis our guest speaker from London. John has decades of experience in the wine trade and he gave a fascinating insight into his theme of “Is climate change a good thing?” Climate change is not all gloom and doom. Science influences winemaking, and the challenge of combating these wild weather patterns has led to some unexpected bonuses. New regions are open to growing vines, especially at altitude. And here in Spain we have a readymade answer –Galicia. John presented five wines from Galicia. Tribute to Tim Ladd
At the September meeting Tim Fawle gave the following tribute To Tim Ladd.“
Tim Ladd sadly passed away on Friday Sept 14 in Kent.
His health had steadily deteriorated over the past few months and prior to that he moved back to the UK residing in a beautiful country house. Tim was a major contributor to CBWS and was awarded an honorary membership on our 25th Anniversary for his outstanding services. Having had a career in the drinks sector working for many years at Harveys of Bristol and the Allied Domeq Tim was a very enthusiastic member and for 7 years took over the Wine Trip organisation with his first trip to Jerez. He introduced members to some fascinating areas and greatly improved our knowledge of wine as his enthusiasm in dealing with bodegas was infectious he was very interested in the developing wine trade in Spain He was a special man who believed passionately in the causes he was involved in, particularly the Wine Society where he was at the forefront of ensuring members and guests kept to the spirit of the Society – he was a notable president, organised successful wine trips and enthused all with his up to date knowledge of the wine trade in Spain. Some of us were fortunate in being invited to his special birthday celebrations in Oporto where his planning and organisation were faultless, we understood the passion he had when working for Harvey’s and Allied Domecq and his contacts in the Sherry and port business.
Tim, you will be missed by all of us but we know you will be up there sitting on the right hand of the Father tasting the wine and offering your knowledgeable opinion to everyone! WE SALUTE YOU!”
Bodegas Van Bleda
Bodegas Bleda will be in Moraira, Solpark Parking, Thursday, 11th of October, AT 12 O’CLOCK, in order to offer their quality wines. They are bringing a very special offer of more than a 20% discount in their top wine, DIVUS, produced with 100% Monastrell from old vines and 10 months in new French oak barrels. The tasting will take place on October 18th at Punta Negra, MR Les Rotes, Denia, when Caryl and Gordon Sellars will be presenting the ever popular “Whose Wine is it Anyway?”
If you wish to reserve accommodation at the hotel for the night please just mention that you are attending the CBWS dinner and the hotel will offer you 15% discount from the room rate. Early booking is strongly recommended.
