Calpe.   The newly elected President Maureen Holliday welcomed the 47 members to the tasting.   As is traditional, for this first meeting the President presented her own selection of wines.   The cost of each wine and where it can be purchased and average score given by members is shown in the list of wines tasted in 2019, which can be found by clicking on “Wines tasted in 2019”.

The first wine was a blanco, Terra Verum 2016 from Bodegas y Vinedos Verum in DO Castilla-La Mancha.  The wine was 100% Airen de Pie Franco from vines more than 60 years old.   It was straw yellow in colour with aromas of white fruit and minerals and reminiscent of chalk in the mouth. On the palate it is clean tasty and very fresh, with a long finish.

The second blanco to be tasted was Dilema 2016, a 100% Verdejo from Bodegas Dilema in DO Rueda.   This wine is pale yellow with greenish tones.  It has a complex aroma with herbal and fennel touches, fine herbs, citrus and a tropical fruit background. It is a very well balanced wine with a rounded aftertaste.

Vote of Thanks

The first red was Milflores 2017 from Bodega Palacio in DO Rioja.   A 100% Tempranillo it is a brilliant cherry red with violet tones. On the nose the aroma of tempranillo of the Rioja Alavesa area predominates, although there are also notes of raspberry with hints of liquorice with fennel.  The palate is fresh and broad with very friendly tannins.

Number two red was Misiva Roble 2017 from Bodega Vinedos de Aldeanueva in the DO of Ribera del Duero, it has been aged in French oak.   Intense and clean ruby red colour it is 100% Tempranillo with a very nice balsamic aroma soft and long lasting.

The final red was Septiembre Roble 2017 from Bodegas Uvaguilera also in the DO of Ribera del Duero.   Also 100%Tempranillo Septiembre has been matured in oak barrels for six moths.   It is concentrated, with intense colour, presenting on the nose a perfect balance between fruit and oak making it wide, complex and persistent while at the same time being smooth and elegant in the mouth.
