Tasting March 2022

Los Amigos Javea 22nd March 2022

This evening took the form of an informal quiz arranged by Neville and Sarah Richardson.
The wines tasted  were all from the Los Aljibes vineyard. This winery will be familiar to many members from previous wine trips and a more recent Zoom presentation during lockdown. It is a family-owned business based in the Tierra de Castilla region close to Albacete, making it one of the highest vineyards in Spain. The combination of the arid and demanding climate, the limestone bedrock and the attention paid to high quality and modern production processes, leads to a wide range of very good wines. Aljibes has 178 hectares of vines and 50 hectares of olives. It has vast production capacity with maturation taking place in 18 French oak vats of 10,000 and 5,000 litres. The winery’s cellars store up to 500,000 bottles.
We tasted five wines, as follows;
Aljibes White 2021. A blend of Sauvignon Blanc (80%) and Chardonnay (20%). It has a pale straw colour with the tropical fruit bouquet of passion fruit and refreshing acidity of Sauvignon Blanc, combined with the body and balance provided by the oak aged Chardonnay. Aljibes Rose 2021. A 100% Syrah rosado, leading to a bright and deep raspberry colour. It has aromas and taste of strawberry and yoghurt. A refreshing rosado with a well-balanced palate for a warm summer’s day around the pool. Price €4.06 per bottle.
