Tasting Report June 2025

CBWS Tasting held on 19/06/25 at Puerto Blanco, Calpe and attended by 60 members and guests.

The theme of this month’s wine tasting was food and wine pairing.   It was designed to highlight the harmony between small plates and wines selected by David Reece, the sommelier at the historic favourite venue Restaurante Puerto Blanco in Calpe. 

 

Wine 1 Name and VintageBender Paulessen Trocken Riesling (Mosel, Germany)2023

Wine 1 DescriptionColour: a clear, pale straw with faint green tinges. Nose: clean, medium intense with aromas of citrus fruits, green apples, peach and subtle hints of white blossom. There is a slight hint of petrol and an underlaying slate/mineral notes. The palate is dry with a hint of sweetness, a high acidity – crisp and vibrant, typical of the cooler climate found in Mosel. The flavour intensity is medium, with zesty lemon/lime, green apples with a mineral finish.

Wine 2 DescriptionThis wine is a blend of Treixadura, Albariño, and Godello grapes, The wine is described as smooth and pleasant on the palate, with flavours of tropical and stone fruits, herbs, and mint, culminating in a long and fresh finish. It is a clear, light to medium pale straw yellow, with white flowers, peach/nectarines and citrus fruits – lemon, lime, grapefruit with a hint of asparagus.

Wine 3 DescriptionIt is known for its aromatic complexity, featuring notes of apricot, fennel, and green almond shell, with hints of hay and smoke. The wine has a lemon-yellow colour with green hues.  This wine is typical of a premium barrel-aged Verdejo with depth and balance. 
Wine 4 Name and VintageValenciso Cememto Rioja

Wine 4 DescriptionValenciso Cemento Rioja is a 100% Tempranillo, known for its unique aging process in concrete tanks, which gives it a distinctive character. It is a medium ruby red colour with purple hints. On the nose there are dark blackberry and plum hints, with red berry undertones of cherry and raspberry. There is a a suggestion of forest floor and wet stone with subtle hints of black pepper mild spice and tobacco, with soft tannins. The wine offers a vibrant and balanced taste, with a smooth texture and a lingering finish. 
Wine 5 Name & VintagePepe Mendoza Paciencia Infinta     
Price per bottle€17 (half-bottle) or €45 (magnum)  
Wine 5 DescriptionPepe Mendoza’s “Paciencia Infinita” is a natural sweet red wine, a Monastrell and Giró blend, It is characterised by its vibrant, aromatic profile, featuring notes of ripe plum, cherry, tomato jam, and hints of chocolate, cocoa, tobacco, and cigar. It is a clear, medium-deep ruby red with a garnet rim. The wine offers a balanced palate with excellent interplay of alcohol, acidity, and sweetness, leading to a long, smoky finish. It is made with sustainable methods and minimal intervention, including no added alcohol and a low sulfite addition. Very good to excellent, ready to drink now and through 2028. 
Closing CommentsOur enjoyment of the evening was not materially affected by some confusion as to which wines were paired with which plates.
