Newsletter September 2025

Dear members

I hope that you are enjoying the heat, humidity and general hustle and bustle of summer! It seems difficult to imagine that in only a couple of months we’ll be thinking about warmer clothes and possibly putting on the heating. So for the next few weeks enjoy your chilled wines and barbecues.

As a general point of information, please be aware that the new lower drink, driving limits are now in place in Spain, with the new limits being much lower than in England and Wales and many other countries.

I mentioned in my last newsletter that at our January AGM we will be proposing an increase in our maximum membership numbers to 170. So if you have any friends who are interested in joining CBWS, please encourage them to complete the membership application on our website. They will benefit from being ‘pending members’ for the remainder of this year and have higher priority for joining as full members in January.

Our next tasting event on Thursday 18 September is at Costa Marco on the Teulada/Benissa border. The theme of the event, which Sara and I will be hosting is ‘Who do you think we are’, showcasing the fascinating backgrounds of some of our members. Your responses have been absolutely amazing. Suffice to say that we did not have space to include the classically trained ballerina, the bestselling author, the international musician, nor those who had dinner with Desmond Tutu, abseiled from a Chinook helicopter or chatted to Neil Armstrong. We will be tasting favourite wines of those whose stories are included and I can assure you that it is an excellent (and expensive!) selection.

Your welcome Cava will be available on the terrace from 19.30, with dinner commencing at 20.00. A cash bar will be available for early arrivals. As this is a relatively small venue our numbers are limited to 64 so I suggest that you book early. The price is €45 for members and €55 for guests.The menu for the event is as follows;

Entradas/ starters (all 4 to be shared on each table)

Ensalada de jamon de pato

( thinly sliced duck salad)

Tartar de salmon

(salmon tartar)

Alcachofas salteadas

(sauteed artichokes)

Jamon, queso y frutos secos

(ham, cheese and nuts)

          ***********

Platos principales/ main courses (choose one)

Solomillo de cerdo con salsa de champinones

(pork fillet with mushroom sauce)

          ***

Merluza a las fines hierbas

(cod with fine herbs)

          ***

Paella verduras

(vegetable paella)

          **********

Postres/desserts

Mousse de chocolate de Baileys

(Baileys chocolate mousse ).

Please book directly on the {CBWS website} or via the link below. Booking is now open and will close at midday on 12 September after which no more bookings can be made and there will be no refunds for cancellations. If we have available spaces, pending members will be able to book places from 8 September.

Our programme for the remainder of 2025 is as follows;

On 7 to 8 October our autumn wine trip will be taking place, this is already fully subscribed and we have a waiting list.

On 16 October at Les Rotes in Denia, Tony and Cherry will present Vinos de Pago. Those familiar with this categorisation will know that it represents the very best of Spanish wines.

On 20 November at El Poblet in Denia, Neil and Vicki will be presenting ‘Tales of the Unexpected’. A fascinating and eclectic selection of wines from around the world, paired with an excellent menu at a new venue for CBWS.

11 December (note this earlier than usual date) at Javea Yacht Club will be the President’s gala evening with my choice of favourite wines, some fun quizzes/games and perhaps even a gift for attendees.

Enjoy the remainder of summer, wherever you are.

Regards

Neville
