Trip Report October 2023

Bookings open 10.00(CET) on Tuesday 1st August – you will not be able to book before this date. If you wish to book please click the link below or visit the events booking page on our website.

This year’s Autumn Wine Trip will be to the neighbouring DO’s of Jumilla and Yecla in the Region of Murcia, famous for their fruity and full bodied Monastrell wines. Wine production has a long history in the area with records of vines being planted during the Phoenician period and later continued by the Romans.  Apart from wine production the area is noted for its agriculture, shoe making and furniture manufacturing.

We will travel by coach from Javea on Monday October 2nd, arriving at Bodegas Luzón in DO Jumilla for a visit of their modern facilities followed by a tasting and light tapas lunch.

We will then drive to Yecla where we will check into our centrally located “Hotel Avenida” . This simple hotel offers comfortable rooms and a pleasant dining room and bar.  In the afternoon we will visit Bodegas Castaño, DO Yecla, an old friend of the Costa Blanca Wine Society, but as yet undiscovered by some of our newer members.

The day will end with a welcome aperitivo in the Hotel, followed by a tapas style meal of local specialities.

Day 2 will commence with a relaxed breakfast in the hotel and free time to explore the attractive town of Yecla.  The renowned Basilica de la Purisima Concepcion is just a short walk away as is the Archaeological Museum.  The narrow streets also hold a variety of shops, bars and leafy plazas.

Boarding the coach again we will make the short journey to Bodegas Barahonda another favourite of ours in this area.  With a history of wine making going back to the 19th century, this family bodega is highly regarded for the quality and unique character of its wines. We will visit their modern installations followed by a tasting of at least 3 wines. Finally we will enjoy a gastronomic lunch in their dining room which has been recognised in the Michelin Guide and has received high praise in a number of other important publications.

Following our lunch we will return by coach to Javea.

We expect the cost to be approximately €260 per person in a double/twin room and €270 in a single. This price is fully inclusive of everything listed above.

Bookings will open at 10.00 (CET) on Tuesday 1st August and must be made via the online booking system. We will aim to take a total of 34 members on this trip. Please note places are NOT available to non-members. If over- subscribed places will be offered to those with the highest attendance of CBWS meetings. Priority will also be given to those who were unsuccessful in securing a place for the Nodus tasting.
