The Wine Trip Team are pleased to announce that the CBWS May 2024 Wine Trip will be to the DO of Costers del Segre which is in the Province of Lleida in Catalunya. The Society last visited this region in 2011. We will leave Javea by private coach on the morning of Tuesday 7th May and return late afternoon on Friday 10th May.

We will be based in the small town of Balaguer, the capital of the Noguera region.  It is located beside the river Segre, a tributary of the Ebro, which gives its name to the DO.  The town was re-conquered from the Moors in 1106 by the Count of Urgell and its historic centre is one of the few that have retained the original Moorish plan, with the market place being the largest porched square in Catalunya.

We will be based at the Hotel Santuari, a modern building built on the site of a former Sanctuary on a hillside above the town.  The hotel is still owned by the church and abuts the convent of St. Clare of Assisi and the church of Sant Christ. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped, with many having views across the river Segre or to the Pre-Pyrenees in the distance.

We will visit one bodega en route in the DO of Conca de Barbara and 4 bodegas during our 3-night stay in the DO of Costers del Segre. In 1983 Manuel Raventós, who is well known for his Codorniu bodega, began the process which led to the establishment of the DO of Costers del Segre.  His Raimat bodega, which we will be visiting, is one of the flagships of the region.

Prices are still being finalised but we expect the cost to be €458 per person sharing a double/twin room and € 518 for a single room.  The price includes return travel from Javea in a private coach, visits and tastings in 5 bodegas, 3 nights accommodation and breakfast, two dinners and one lunch.

If you would like to attend please email Sandy NOW to register your interest. Please email her at Sandy will confirm receipt of your email so – if you haven’t had an acknowledgement – she hasn’t received it.

Sandy will then confirm your place in the next 2-3 weeks as soon as we have a better idea of numbers and final costs. At this stage we will ask you for a deposit to hold your place.

We are excited to be returning to this important wine-producing region and for those of you unfamiliar with their wines we are sure you will enjoy discovering them with us.
