Newsletter June 2023

Dear Members

May was an active month for CBWS firstly with the Wine Trip to DO’s Calatayud and Campo de Borja on May 9 and followed by our Monthly wine tasting at Hotel MR, Denia on May 18.

A total of 38 members participated on The Wine Trip with 10 people joining us for their first Wine Trip experience, which they all enjoyed. We visited 5 bodegas, all with a different business model, and also a cultural visit to the outstanding Monasterio de Piedra. Please see photos and read the full report on the Trip by clicking here

At our May meeting a total of 50 members and guests enjoyed an interesting tasting of Marques de Riscal wines hosted by Paul and Helen Nicholls who initiated this tasting when they visited Bodega Marques de Riscal in Rioja last year.  This bodega has a rich history dating back to 1858 and to present their wines was Rafael Ruiz Isla director of Wine Education. The wines that were presented are distributed by Bodegas Aguilar in Ondara.  Marques de Riscal have offered us, as an association, a special “professionals” price which is available to all members on presentation of the list of wines tasted which can be found at the bottom of this Newsletter, which should be printed and cut out. A full report can be found here

September Meeting – September 21st

Our September meeting will be a unique event hosted by Tony and Cherry Cabban.  This will be set in the Riu Rau in Jesus Pobre where an interesting selection of wines and cuisine will be offered. Full details of this will be sent to you nearer the time.

October Meeting – October 19th

This event is being organised by Tasting Team members Neil Robertson and Vicki Wyatt.

This will be a ‘Dinner, Bed & Breakfast’ event at one of the most beautifully situated Bodegas in the countryside of the Utiel Requena region, west of Valencia. Most of you will know of NODUS Wines, which feature on the Wine Lists of many good local restaurants. You may not know they also have a small hotel on site – Hotel Rural Entreviñas, which can accommodate a ‘house party’ of up to 28 people.

Our programme will start with a guided Bodega Tour at 4.pm  (in English) and a Tasting of 3 Nodus Wines, a cava reception and a dinner accompanied by Nodus wines.

It is situated approximately 90 to 110 minutes from Javea and everyone will be responsible for their own travel arrangements. Accommodation comprises 10 double or twin rooms and 2 apartments with 2 bedrooms/1 shared bathroom each. (There is no single accommodation so some of you may wish to plan to share a room, and we should be able to allocate you a twin room). Breakfast on the following morning will be included in the price.

The price will be in the region of €110 per person average, with a slightly lower rate for the shared apartments.

Bookings will open in July, following the July Newsletter, which will give further details.  Places will be allocated strictly on a first come first served basis. Please do not try to book before this date.

Best regards
