CBWS Newsletter September 2023

Dear Members,

Welcome back from the summer break and I hope you have had an enjoyable time tasting some excellent wines!

We start our Autumn programme with some interesting events. This month something different has been organised for the tasting on September 21st. Our Tasting Team members, Tony & Cherry Cabban have arranged the following event which has required a lot of planning and we are very grateful for all their hard work.

Tasting and Picnic Jesus Pobre Riurau Thursday 21st September

Our September tasting will be a very informal picnic (Feel free to wear your shorts!) and will be held in the fabulous Jesus Pobre Riurau

The theme is to taste local wines and the grapes from which they are produced and discuss how the taste of the grapes used comes through in the taste of the wines. We will also taste two Marina Alta olive oils

This very different tasting will be complemented by a rustic picnic of local food. All very relaxed. Gentlemen may wear shorts!

Presenters: Santiago Signes (Santi) owner of El Celler de la Marina, Gata and Tony & Cherry Cabban. Organised with the help of Sara & Neville Richardson and Tim & Sandy Fawle.

Members 30€, Guests 35€ Casual dress.

Earlier start time of 7.00 pm, doors open 6.30 pm

The chairs are plastic, feel free to bring a cushion.

  • Sweet dessert wine to accompany “Musicos”, a traditional Spanish plate of raisins & nuts.

The ham & cheese and the sliced sausages will be sourced from the Gata de Gorgos butcher Ca Curros, established in 1913 and run by 4th generation brothers using high quality ingredients and traditional methods. The Cocas, Croquetas and Dessert will be made to order by Ana of Jesus Pobre, who specialises in these dishes.

Bookings should be made in the usual way through the website.  Please use the link below and follow the online instructions or go to the event booking page on the website.

Bookings are open now and  close as usual on the Friday before the event which in this case will be Friday September 15th.

As this is a unique event we would welcome guests, particularly those who have an interest in wine and could be possible future members.

If you would like to stay the night in Jesus Pobre there is a small, very nice, hostal in the main street, five minutes’ walk from the Riu Rau. Here is the link to their website: Hostal Tres Molins

Autumn Wine Trip – October 2-3

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the trip to Yecla as we only received 17 requests for places which fell well short of our target of 34 making the trip unviable. This is the first time we have failed to fill a wine trip which, as many of you will know, are usually oversubscribed.  This is undoubtedly due to a number of different factors which we will be studying when organising future trips. We are grateful for the support of those members who had expressed interest and look forward to receiving more participants on the next trip.

October Meeting – October 19 – NOW FULLY BOOKED

Tasting Team members Neil Robertson and Vicki Wyatt have arranged  our October Tasting, details of which, were communicated to you last month. This is a dinner bed and breakfast event at one of the beautifully situated NODUS Bodega in the countryside of the Utiel Requena region, west of Valencia. We will be staying in their on-site Hotel Rural Entreviñas.

November Meeting – November 16

This Tasting will take place at Restaurant Los Amigos, Javea and will be hosted by Tasting Team members Andrew and Kathy Johnson.  More details to follow.

December Meeting – December 7

I will be hosting this meeting at A Bordo Restaurant Club Nautico, Javea and it will be our Christmas event. Please note this is earlier than usual and is the FIRST Thursday of December.

I look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible on September 21 in Jesus Pobre.

Best regards,

Tim Fawle
